Temple Construction

Welcome to ISKCON Gangasagar: A Monumental Journey of Faith and Heritage

Discover the ISKCON Gangasagar Temple—an extraordinary project celebrating Bengal’s rich cultural heritage and serving as a beacon of Vedic education, spirituality, and community service. Situated on the serene Gangasagar Island, just 750 meters away from the historic Lord Kapil Muni Ashram in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, this iconic temple invites millions of visitors worldwide to experience the timeless art and Vedic culture of India.

A Vision Taking Shape

With a total project cost of ₹50 crores, the ISKCON Gangasagar Temple is being developed in three transformative phases:

Phase 1: Construction of the majestic main temple.
Phase 2: Development of a guest house for pilgrims, accommodating up to 700 guests overnight.
Phase 3: Establishment of a state-of-the-art full-dome theater and a food relief kitchen serving the community year-round.

The first phase, budgeted at ₹20 crores, is progressing rapidly. Spanning 50,000 sq. ft. of built-up area across G+2 levels, the temple is being constructed on a generous 3.5-acre plot, graciously allocated by the Government of West Bengal. Special thanks are extended to Smt. Mamata Banerjee, the Honorable Chief Minister of Bengal. This phase is being sponsored by the family of the Late Govind Saha Gupta, including Mrs. Sushila Mata, Mr. Amit Gupta, Mrs. Vineeta Gupta, and Mrs. Asha Kothari.

Temple Highlights

Presiding Deities: Sri Sri Jagannatha, Baladeva, Subhadra Devi, and Sri Sri Radha-Krishna will be enshrined on the first floor, radiating divinity and peace.
Ground Floor: Features an air-conditioned auditorium, a mahaprasadam counter, a souvenir shop showcasing local handicrafts, and a light-and-sound exhibition narrating Mother Ganga’s divine descent.
Architectural Marvel: Includes 21 intricately designed domes, with 18 already completed.
Cultural Amenities: Boasts a beautifully carved wooden deity altar, exquisite wooden doors and windows, and visitor-friendly facilities.

Latest Updates on Construction

As of December 2024, the temple’s final dome casting is in progress. Key milestones include:

Completion of interior and exterior plastering on the first floor. Marble flooring, wall cladding, and deity altar construction are upcoming tasks. Ordering of deities, deity altar, and deity dresses is in progress. Finalizing the construction of the remaining domes. Installation of decorative elements and balustrades is scheduled for February 2025, with ground floor plastering completion by March 2025. Final dome finishing, marble installations, intricate woodwork, doors and windows, electrical, and painting tasks to commence in August 2025. Exterior landscaping planning is ongoing, requiring additional funds of ₹1 crore.

The first phase is anticipated to be completed by mid-2025, setting the stage for a grand inauguration at the end of 2025.
