The ISKCON Gangasagar Temple, a monumental project dedicated to celebrating Bengal's cultural heritage and serving as a center for Vedic education and spiritual upliftment, is making remarkable progress in its construction. Located on Gangasagar Island in the South 24 Parganas district, this magnificent temple is poised to become a landmark that will draw visitors from around the world.
The construction, with a total estimated cost of ₹50 crores, is being carried out in three distinct phases. The first phase focuses on the construction of the main temple. The second phase will see the development of a guest house, while the third phase will include the addition of a full-dome theater and a dedicated food relief kitchen.
Currently, the first phase, with a budget of ₹15 crores, is well underway. The temple, rising to a height of G+2 and covering a built-up area of 50,000 sq. ft., is being constructed on approximately 3.5 acres of land generously provided by the State Government of West Bengal. This construction is sponsored by the family of the Late Govind Saha Gupta.
The presiding deities will be enshrined on the first floor of the temple. The ground floor will feature an air-conditioned auditorium, a mahaprasadam counter, a souvenir shop showcasing local handicrafts, a light and sound exhibition narrating the descent of Mother Ganga from the heavens, and various other visitor amenities.
In recent progress, the final slab of the temple was successfully cast in 2023. The temple will feature 21 domes (sikharas); 10 domes have already been completed, with 11 more to follow. Plastering of the first floor, both interior and exterior, has commenced. Installation of design elements, including balustrades, is scheduled for completion by October and November. Dome and marble finishing, intricate wooden carvings for doors and windows, construction of the beautifully carved wooden deity altar, along with electrical and painting work, are set to begin in November 2024. Preliminary planning for exterior landscaping is also underway.
Our dedicated team is working diligently to complete the first phase by mid-2025, setting the stage for a grand inauguration. This temple will serve as a beacon of spiritual and cultural enrichment, welcoming devotees and tourists alike.
