Significance of Makar Sankranti & Gangasagar Mela

Makar Sankranti marks the Sun God’s transition into Uttarayana (northward movement), bringing more light and auspiciousness. This sacred occasion is one of the most significant in the Hindu calendar.

Gangasagar Mela, the second-largest pilgrimage gathering after Kumbha Mela, takes place when millions of pilgrims from across the world gather to take a holy dip at the confluence of the River Ganga and the Bay of Bengal on Makar Sankranti. According to Vedic scriptures, bathing at this sacred confluence on this day cleanses all sins.

The spiritual aura of Kapil Muni Ashram attracts countless devotees each year. To accommodate the vast influx of pilgrims, a temporary city is erected on the shores of Gangasagar during this auspicious time. The mela is a congregation of yogis, pious pilgrims, sadhus (saints), sannyasis, and brahmacharis from across the world. Notably, the Naga Babas, revered ascetics covered in ash with matted locks, also grace the event with their presence.

ISKCON Gangasagar Seva Camp 2025

This year, ISKCON Gangasagar set up its charitable camp from January 11-16, 2025, on Sagar Island, just 400 meters from Kapil Muni Ashram on Road No. 5, between K2 Bus Stand and Helipad.
